Practical? No. Awesome? Yes!

The Porsche Cayman Transparent Engine Cover by HIP Design multiplies the wonderfulness of the machine. Not only does being able to see the engine in a mid engine vehicle enhance the overall ambiance, the cover also makes the engine remarkably louder in the cabin. The glass also adds a ton of character; not only is it a Porsche Cayman S, but you can also see the power house of the vehicle where most Cayman owners would never gaze.

Taking the glass off and on probably is the easiest "maintenance" you can do to a Porsche. The company designed assembly to be simple and quick. Where as taking apart literally any other part of the car is a bitch and a half. Those conniving Germans really did not want Porsche owners to DIY any aspect of the vehicle. I replaced the radio on a 987 Boxster with a fancy new touch screen pioneer radio and the process took well over an hour.

Upkeep is as expected. Cleaning the engine itself to ensure as little dirt and other grime as possible would show up on the under side of the glass is hard work. The angle at which a person has to be in order to reach the engine is less than comfortable and keeping the area clean in general is kind of difficult and tedious but well worth the result. Before traveling to far away places that call for extra luggage space, screwing the original metal cover and replacing the felt only takes a mere five to ten minutes. But do you really need that little amount of space big enough for a few beach towels?
